In 1856, Francis Frith set sail for what he called “the two most interesting lands of the globe—Egypt and Palestine.” He was 34 and at the beginning of a 40-year career that would establish him as the first and greatest commercial photographer in England. His photographs of Egypt and the Holy Land are some of the earliest and finest.
